Properly disposing of plastic waste is essential to protect the environment and keep our communities and surroundings clean. Plastics have become a source of concern and their improper disposal has led to many harmful consequences to the environment.

Here are some tips on how to dispose of your plastic waste at home responsibly:

1. Reduce plastic usage: The best way to dispose of plastic waste is to not create it in the first place. Start by reducing the amount of plastic you use in your daily life. For example, switch to reusable bags, bottles, and containers.

2. Recycle: If you do use plastic, make sure to recycle it. Check with your local recycling center to see what types of plastic they accept. Rinse out plastic containers and remove any labels before recycling. Before recycling it is important to do proper collection or sorting of the plastic material.

3. Reuse: Instead of throwing away plastic containers, consider reusing them for storage or as planters for small plants. This reduces the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills or polluting our oceans.

4. Dispose of plastic properly: If you can't recycle your plastic, make sure to dispose of it properly. Don't litter or throw plastic waste in the trash. Instead, place it in designated trash bins or take it to a recycling center. Many times, the plastics that are intended for recycling end up being carelessly disposed of and end up in the water bodies polluting the environment.

5. Use biodegradable plastics: Some plastics are labeled as biodegradable, which means they can be broken down by microorganisms into natural substances like water and carbon dioxide. If it is necessary, then you can use compostable plastics. After using them you send them to your local composting program or center.

6. Participate in community cleanups: Join community cleanups to help pick up plastic waste that has been littered. This will help keep your community clean and prevent plastic from entering our water bodies and harming both wildlife and humans.

These are the best ways to dispose of plastic waste. Remember, every little bit counts and each effort of yours can bring about a positive change in our environment that will be beneficial in plastic waste management.

Plastic Items that can be recycled

1. Beverage bottles – Plastic bottles used for water, soda, and other beverages can be recycled. Look for the recycling symbol on the bottom of the bottle to ensure that it can be recycled.

2. Food containers – Plastic containers that hold food, such as food jars, yogurt cups, margarine tubs, and takeout containers can be recycled. Make sure to rinse them out before placing them in the recycling bin.

3. Plastic utensils – Plastic jugs and microwave food trays can be recycled.

Plastics Not to Recycle

- Plastic Bags

- Plastic Cutlery like containers, cups, and straws made of polyester foam

- Plastic toys

- Plastic wrap

- Plastic buckets

- Certain types of plastic packaging

Keep the above points in mind and you are good to go. By following these tips on plastic waste disposal, you can help in plastic waste management by reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills, oceans, and other natural environments.
